Child Nutrition Program Worker (Cafeteria Worker)

Position Overview

The primary responsibility of the Child Nutrition Program Worker will be to prepare and provide healthy, fresh, and delicious CNP approved school meals to Legacy Prep scholars.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide direction, planning, monitoring, and oversight of Legacy Prep Child Nutrition Program (CNP)
  • Supervise, direct, develop, and evaluate CNP personnel and designated staff to ensure quality and safety of school system food services that enhance student achievement and educational programs
  • Prepare healthy and nutritious school meals
  • Collaborate with the Superintendent and system administrators in the effective and efficient management of school system food service programs to maintain safe, comfortable, healthy environments for students, visitors, community members and school system staff
  • Ensures school compliance with federal and state regulations, local health department requirements and school system policies and procedures
  • Ensures the financial status of the individual school cafeterias and the school system child nutrition program to effectively utilize resources and maintain the non-profit organization status
  • Plans and conducts training for child nutrition program workers
  • Assists school administrators in the hiring of child nutrition program personnel and assists as needed with resolution of CNP personnel problems at the school
  • Provides training and demonstrations of use and care of equipment as needed
  • Obtains state approval for and provides specifications to the purchasing department for equipment needs for the child nutrition program
  • Promotes positive public relations for the Child Nutrition Program, by publication of menus and program information, through the involvement of students and parents in CNP school system events and activities
  • Works with CNP workers and school administrators the development and implementation of quality recipes and effective techniques to improve food quality in school meals Assists with developing a calendar for CNP employees based on the school calendar to include school days, training days, and cleaning/maintenance days
  • Oversee the free and reduced-priced lunch application program. Submits to the ALSDE annually a  policy statement and related reports for the school system. Upon ALSDE approval, disseminates the policy statement and program guidelines and rules
  • Oversee the printing and distribution of forms needed to implement the child nutrition program; complies with federal regulations regarding reporting and record-keeping
  • Estimates the amounts of needed commodities, the commodities available, and places orders as directed by the Food Distribution Department of the State Board of Education. Schedules deliveries of available commodities to the school. Monitors records of CNP managers to ensure that required records are kept in an organized fashion and that they comply with HACCP regulations
  • Supervises the review of the After School Care Program to ensure compliance with regulations for reimbursement of approved snacks
  • Serves as the school system contact person with the Alabama State Department of Education in all matters concerning the Child Nutrition Program

Employment Qualifications:

Education
  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid food handler’s card/ServSafe certification and tuberculin test
Experience
  • Child nutrition in a school setting (highly preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of federal and state CNP regulations (preferred)

  • Maintains accountability of recorded documentation for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ensures compliance with school/district policies and procedures.
  • Implements administrative policies for proper use and care of all equipment.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Communicates effectively with CNP manager and other employees.
  • Provides leadership as a team member of the school community.
  • Capability of standing for long periods of time in a cold or hot and humid kitchen environment during food preparation.
  • Capability of lifting heavy objects (up to 40 lbs.) and transferring extremely hot pans.
  • Wears the appropriate work attire on a daily basis.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
